The credit union started in 1953 as a state-chartered credit union to benefit employees of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., in Eden NC. In 1985 when Fieldcrest purchased Cannon Mills Company in Kannapolis, the credit union became "Fieldcrest Cannon Employees Credit Union." Its field of membership included active employees and retirees of the company, their spouses and eligible children. Pillowtex Inc., purchased Fieldcrest Cannon in 1997, and we became the Pillowtex Employee's Credit Union, adding Pillowtex employees and retirees to our field of membership and changing our bylaws to "once a member, always a member." In 2001, the credit union applied to and received approval by the NC Credit Union Division for a community charter; hence, Southern Select Community Credit Union was born. The credit union merged a local credit union in 2007, adding Municpal Thrift Club Credit Union's field of membership, including employees and retirees of the City of Concord, the ABC Commission located within the City of Concord, the Water and Sewer Authority of Cabarrus County, and the Concord Downtown Development Corporation.
Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives. We are owned by the members whom we service, and we must always keep the philosophy of "members first" in all that we do. Also, there is the adopted philosophy in the credit union community ---"people helping people"--- that should be exemplified in what we do each and every day.
We are a credit union that has been successful in the past and plans to be successful in the future. We are serving our current members well, growing, expanding our services and moving towards new and different challenges in the credit union world. Each employee and director is an ambassador of an for the credit union and is expected to promote the credit union at every opportunity. Each of us, individually and collectively, controls the ultimate success of Southern Select Community Credit Union.
